Debian 13 trixie upgrade

Debian 13

Caution Upgrading from Debian 12 to Debian 13 on machines with mdadm has intermittently failed for me; symptom is that grub EFI is not up to date and system boots into BIOS. Root cause under investigation; it might not be related to mdadm.

To start, read the official release notes.

If your install fits into "vanilla Debian plus maybe a handful of 3rd-party repos", then this guide for a simple upgrade to Debian 13 "trixie" from Debian 12 "bookworm" can be helpful. 3rd-party repos are handled with a find command.

Note upgrade is only supported from Debian 12 to Debian 13. If you are on Debian 11, upgrade to Debian 12 first. Then once on Debian 12, you can upgrade to Debian 13.

my proxmox cluster

ProxMox Cluster - Soup-to-Nutz

aka what i did to get from nothing to done.

note: these are designed to be primarily a re-install guide for myself (writing things down helps me memorize the knowledge), as such don't take any of this on blind faith - some areas are well tested and the docs are very robust, some items, less so). YMMV

Fedora 35 hibernation with swapfile, only for hibernation and resume

Fedora35 hibernation

This guide helps to configure the hibernation on a default Fedora35 (also worked fine in previous Fedora34) installation by using a swap file. The Fedora35 installation comes with btrfs as default filesystem. Also, it comes with a zram swap device:

$ swapon
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/dev/zram0 partition 8G 0B 100

The Freenode resignation FAQ, or: "what the fuck is going on?"

IMPORTANT NOTE:

It's come to my attention that some people have been spamming issue trackers with a link to this gist. While it's a good idea to inform people of the situation in principle, please do not do this. By all means spread the word in the communities that you are a part of, after verifying that they are not aware yet, but unsolicited spam is not helpful. It will just frustrate people.

Update 3 (May 24, 2021)

A number of things have happened since the last update.

My install instruction for a secure Arch Linux (sway) laptop workstation

What's Cool

  • Encrypted root partition
    • AES-256 bit cipher
    • Argon2id variant for PBKDF
    • Sha3-512 bit hash
  • rEFInd bootloader
    • With dreary theme
    • Optimal Settings (optimized for aesthetics, and boot time)
  • Boot into backups thanks to refind-btrfs

For all of you wanting this feature there's a great option out there if you're willing to step beyond Signal: Conversations. There's no primary/secondary distinction: it does true-multi-device multi-key encryption (they adopted libsignal and built on it and I'm very grateful that OWS developed and released it so it could be built upon), as well as video chat, file attachments (encrypted, of course), and cross-device history syncing, and all that at 1/3rd the size of Signal, and without a dependency on push notifications. And you can pretty easily set up alt identities and use them on the same devices so there's no need to worry about [giving out a private number](https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/9kaxge/how-to-use-signal-without-giving-out-your-phone-number-a-gender
