Morning Routine

morning, routine

On-time performance is crucial in commercial aviation. No matter how good any other part of an airline might be, the airline lives or dies by on-time performance. The primary metric used to measure on-time performance in airline operations is D0. "D", meaning the scheduled departure time and "0", meaning the number of minutes after the scheduled departure time it took the plane to leave. Thus, D0 means leaving no later than the scheduled departure time.

The reason this is the primary metric used to measure on-time performance in a given day is that, if the first flight for a given plane leaves on time, it is very likely that the plane will fly on-time for the rest of the day. The inverse is true as well, if a plane leaves late for the first flight of the day, there is very little chance that this time will ever be made up throughout the day.

This list of action items is my check-list which leads to a perfect D0. If the items in this list are checked off, there is a good chance the rest of the day will go according to plan. The list is the result of several years of trial and error. It may seem simple, but each step has been carfully considered and tweaked to overcome obstacles which have been difficult for me to overcome. Several obstacles this list has helped me conquer include sleeping through alarms, snoozing alarms, waking up too late to get an adequate workout done, and waking up unprepared for the next day's activities, just to name a few.

Night before:

~ 1hr before bed:

  • review the next day's calendar:
    • double check that important items are tracked in obsidian as to-dos.
    • ensure calendar meeting events are correct (time, attendees, notes, etc.).
    • write out bigger to-dos using whiteboard marker on bathroom mirror.
  • set alarm:
    • alarm should be in the kitchen.
    • alarm should be set at a time early enough to get a workout in.
  • prep gym bag.

~ 30min before bed:

  • prep for bed (wash face, brush teeth, etc.).
  • read kindle/paper book in bed until sleep comes.

Morning of:

  • Walk to kitchen to turn off alarm.
  • Drink large glass of cold water.
  • Make coffee.
  • Fetch mail, take off shoes for a few steps while outside (weather permitting).
  • Set mail on desk.
  • Get dressed for gym.
  • Consume pre-workout.
  • Consume yogurt.
  • Drink coffee.
  • Leave for gym by 6:30am.
