Why are black boxes so hard to reuse?

I think our field will go through a revolution. We will fundamentally change the way we think about and use abstraction in the engineering of software.

The goal of this talk is to summarize the need for and the basic nature of this abstraction framework.

The change is not new problems or new systems, but a new way of thinking about existing problems and existing systems.

Best known as the inventor of Clojure, a Lisp that runs on the Java Virtual Machine and the first new member of the Lisp family to attract any widespread interest since Scheme and Common Lisp, Rich Hickey has been a software developer and consultant for two decades.

Prior to starting work on Clojure, he made four attempts to combine Lisp with either Java or Microsoft’s Common Language Runtime: jfli, Foil, Lisplets, and DotLisp but Clojure was the first to draw significant attention. To date there have been four books published on Clojure, including The Joy of Clojure by interviewer Michael Fogus. Move/Copy/Borrow Semantics in Programming

Or, ramblings and complaints about the general state of programming and other possibly related grievances.

There are 3 primary ways to pass data into functions: move, copy, or borrow (aka a reference). Since mutability is inherently intertwined with data passing (this function can borrow my data, but only if they promise not to mess with it), we end up with 6 distinct combinations.

Git Subtree Basics

If you hate git submodule, then you may want to give git subtree a try.

Background

When you want to use a subtree, you add the subtree to an existing repository where the subtree is a reference to another repository url and branch/tag. This add command adds all the code and files into the main repository locally; it's not just a reference to a remote repo.

When you stage and commit files for the main repo, it will add all of the remote files in the same operation. The subtree checkout will pull all the files in one pass, so there is no need to try and connect to another repo to get the portion of subtree files, because they were already included in the main repo.

Let's say you already have a git repository with at least one commit. You can add another repository into this respository like this:
