@ruvnet yesterday, in the coding session; I had asked if each of the modes can be allocated a different LLM. You mentioned we can. Please clarify where in the .roomodes json file, we can can specify different LLM for each of the slugs and if the different API keys for different LLMs have to be specified too?
@mondweep you do this within Roo Code. Create custom profiles with your wanted model. Then assign the profile to the mode. This support was added in 3.12. See https://docs.roocode.com/features/api-configuration-profiles
So the Orchestrator is the universal entry point for any task. Let's say I give him a task to perform refactor, it should pass this to Optimizer or Architect? But how roles know about existence of other roles? Didn't found explicit information about that in prompts for either of agents.
@EmpathyZeroed (love the name, btw lol) Roo injects the custom modes and their role definition into the system prompt. If you go to the prompts settings and scroll until you see the "Preview System Prompt", you should see them there.
I'm running into an issue where the orchestrator will pass along a request to the specification writer, which will do some work and send the output back to the orchestrator. The orchestrator will then send a task to the architect, but it will only summarize what the specification writer said, or it will tell the architect to imagine that such content exists. The actual files indicated by the specification writer for the content it creates are never actually created on the file system, and the orchestrator refuses to understand that it isn't actually providing this context to the architect. Any ideas?
Edit: I'm also running into issues where the orchestrator will have the architect do its work, and then when the thread returns to the orchestrator, it will call up the architect again to actually write the file using the content generated by the architect previously, telling it to reference its previous output. Then the architect will say it can't write files and will call up the coder to write the file, and the coder will say it doesn't have access to previous output.
The issues seem to revolve around a lack of a clearly defined file writing workflow. The different modes don't seem to understand when they should actually write specifications/architectural documentation to disk, or what context other modes have access to (that would determine whether those other modes can do the writing).
Edit 2: I'm using Google Gemini 2.5 Pro Preview for all modes currently.

That's because it takes a lot more then just this modes file to achieve orchestration this is where things like roo-commander come in play. roo-commander has it's flaws the main one being that orchestration in roo only works if the groups are set properly. If the orchestrator has edit, command, etc rights then it will try and do the work itself. roo commander has not mastered proper setup of this yet so the flow can be inconsistent at times however it gets better and you can tweek it yourself. I actually get better hand off using the default orchestrator with roo-commander modes because it is setup properly in the code to be the orchestrator (so long as you don't modify the mode system prompt or override the mode wrong) and nothing else. But more to the point it shows you what you need to do to take absolute control over the what, why's, how and when's of autonomous orchestration. If it is not programmed in the code then orchestration at runtime is the only way to lock down the context roo commander shows how to do this. So if your adventurous you can use this and roo-commander as a blueprint to create your own filebased orchestration layer for roo-code, cline, cursor, kilocode, copilot they all support this just implemented differently in each except for the cline family of extensions which tend to have some compatibility or legacy support in some cases.
But understand. Autonomous AI Agents are only as good as the context they keep not the context they know. Knowledge is retained through training, context is lost to session. This is a issue with AI and has not really been provided a standardized solution but it is also the root cause of your complaint the inability of the AI (without further training, context, RBAC, Policies ect) to perform consistently across your project the same way every time all the time. While roo-commander has a way to go it is a very good example of what would be required to gain localized conductor control over your AI tools. If the info is there it will use it if you setup your orchestration and workflows properly and it cannot be understated that a knowledge base is key to improvements and more focused productivity over time.
I operate a VSCode IDE swarm across multiple workstations (5 Physical) running synergy for network keyboard and mouse control spread out across 6 monitors all running a customized fork of kilocode. I do this for a living and can confirm that it takes some effort to tune your AI team but once you do it is absolutely insane (you never really ever finish as you will be adding things to your file based system all the time as will your agents). With 5 Kilo Teams up and running seamless like i am on one big workstation with 6 monitors my productivity is insane and because i have taken the time to do this my success rate is at about 90% correct code generation the first iteration with the remaining 10% fixed in testing. I ported a popular and massive PHP framework (have not released it yet coming soon) to Dart in 9 months with just one roo-code and myself for $2500.00 in openrouter credits. So properly tuned it can be done. Just go in with this in mind LLM's are trained on data this is what gives them the power they know everything however, in order for them to be really useful in production they must be tuned. So the 2 T's Training and Tuning and they are not the same. Training requires massive GPU power and GB's of training datasets, Tuning and contextual domain specific learning can all be done using this file based approach. It is all about persona, rules, workflows and knowledge. Training only means the LLM went to school but it's only book smart it still needs to be Tuned On the Job just like a human fresh out of school.
Going to give that Sparc2 a go looks interesting.
