"caption": "Time for travel, across the world and back in time, for the birth or \u2018modern\u2019 paper! \n\nBy the fifth century AD, the Aztecs and Mayans were creating a material made of ground, washed and dried bark (called amate) to record images and stories, but things changed with the arrival of Europeans. \n\nPapermaking (made from cloth, hemp, flax or other plant fibres) was introduced to the Americas, offering a product that was more flexible and accessible than amate but it wasn\u2019t until the early 19th century that wood in paper use was used anywhere. \n\nFriedrich Gottlob Keller (in Germany) and Charles Fenerty (in Canada) discovered how to use ground wood pulp to create paper and, by 1844, they (separately, but simultaneously) announced that they had invented machines to facilitate that process. Fenerty also bleached the pulp, making the paper white. \n\nBy the end of the 19th-century almost all printers in the western world were using wood to make paper.
