Garmin GPSmap 64st

General info

General thoughts

  • Powerful GPS units, interface is garbage and is not intuitive.
  • In the field, these units may annoy people more than they help
  • Should be used for information gathering, not navigation (I found something of interest and need to tell somebody)

Batteries

  • 2 AA
  • Lift and twist small ring on the back

Navigating the GPS

Press "Page" or "Quit" until the desired function is in the middle of the screen.

This is how you return to the map mode from the settings, etc.

UTM

Set UTM

Menu -> Setup -> Position Format -> Position Format -> UTM UPS

Get UTM

Main Menu -> Satellite

UTM Coordinates do not include the meter digit. The coordinates you should read should be the last 4 from each line.

Your location

Find -> Coordinates

Waypoints

Save a waypoint

"Mark"

Arrows to change the fields. Ideally set a name and a note. This interface is terrible. Make sure to click "Done" in order to save the waypoint
