"The Light That Fills All Things" A Sermon on God's Universal Presence and Our Response

"The Light That Fills All Things"

A Sermon on God's Universal Presence and Our Response

Opening Prayer & Scripture

"In him was life; and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not." - John 1:4-5

Introduction

Brothers and sisters, we live in an age where many feel disconnected - from God, from each other, from purpose. Today I want to share some profound truths about how intimately connected we actually are to our Creator and His divine order.

1. CHRIST: THE UNIVERSAL LIGHT

The scriptures teach us something magnificent about Jesus that we often overlook. He is not just the light of our salvation - He is literally "the light which is in all things, which giveth life to all things, which is the law by which all things are governed."

Think about this: when you see the sun rise, you're witnessing Christ's power. When you marvel at moonlight or starlight, you're seeing His glory manifest. As one inspired writer put it: "He is in the sun, and the light of the sun, and the power thereof by which it was made."

This isn't pantheism, beloved - this is recognizing that our Savior is the sustaining force behind all creation. No wonder Paul wrote that "in him we live, and move, and have our being" (Acts 17:28).

Application: When you feel distant from God, step outside. Look at the sun, moon, stars. Remember - the same Christ who died for you is the power behind what you're seeing.

2. FAITH AND LEARNING UNITED

How many of you have felt tension between faith and education? Between what you learn in church and what you study in school or read in books?

Here's a truth that should liberate us: "Seek learning, even by study and also by faith."

God doesn't want us to choose between intellectual growth and spiritual growth - He wants both! The same God who inspired scripture also created the natural laws scientists discover. Truth is truth, whether found in prayer or in study.

Biblical Foundation: "Study to shew thyself approved unto God" (2 Timothy 2:15) and "Add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge" (2 Peter 1:5).

Application: Encourage your children's education. Read good books. Ask hard questions. God isn't threatened by your curiosity - He inspired it!

3. DRAWING NEAR TO GOD

Many Christians feel like God is distant, that prayer is one-way communication. But we have this beautiful promise: "Draw near unto me and I will draw near unto you; seek me diligently and ye shall find me."

This echoes James 4:8, but with added assurance. God isn't hiding from us - He wants to be found! And here's something wonderful: "He that seeketh me early shall find me, and shall not be forsaken."

Application: Make morning devotions a priority. God promises to meet those who seek Him early. Start your day with Him, and watch how He draws near throughout your day.

4. COMMUNITY AND CARING

Individual salvation is wonderful, but God calls us to something more. We're told to "learn to impart one to another as the gospel requires" and to "cease to be covetous."

This isn't socialism - this is Christianity! The early church "had all things common" (Acts 2:44) because they understood that God's children should care for each other practically, not just spiritually.

Application: Look around your neighborhood. Who needs help with groceries, car repairs, childcare? The gospel requires us to share what we have.

5. ORDER IN ALL THINGS

God is a God of order. We read that "all kingdoms have a law given" and that law brings blessing when followed. This applies to everything - from the planets in their courses to our daily lives.

"Cease to sleep longer than is needful; retire to thy bed early, that ye may not be weary; arise early, that your bodies and your minds may be invigorated."

Even our sleep schedules matter to God! He cares about our physical health, our mental clarity, our daily rhythms.

Biblical Foundation: "Let all things be done decently and in order" (1 Corinthians 14:40).

Application: Evaluate your daily routine. Does it reflect God's order and wisdom? Small changes in discipline can have big spiritual impacts.

6. PREPARATION FOR GREATER THINGS

We're not meant to stay where we are spiritually. God calls us to continuous preparation and growth. As it's written: "Sanctify yourselves that your minds become single to God, and the days will come that you shall see him."

This is our ultimate hope - not just heaven someday, but genuine encounter with our Creator, prepared for through daily sanctification.

Application: What is God preparing you for? What areas of your life need to be "set apart" for Him? Growth requires preparation.

Closing

Brothers and sisters, we serve a God who fills all creation with His light, who wants to draw near to us, who cares about our learning and our daily lives, who calls us to care for each other, and who is preparing us for greater things than we can imagine.

The same power that lights the sun wants to fill your heart. The same wisdom that governs the planets wants to guide your decisions. The same love that died for you wants to live through you to others.

"If your eye be single to my glory, your whole bodies shall be filled with light, and there shall be no darkness in you."

May we leave today with eyes single to His glory, hearts open to His light, and hands ready to serve His people.

Amen.

[Closing hymn: "How Great Thou Art" or "Be Thou My Vision"]
