Content on the new data.gov will be organized using a "topic" hierarchy. Each topic will have a page that will include content such as highlights, updates, featured applications, featured websites, maps, and more. You can see how this hierarchy will work by visiting the current design comps on Layervault.
The purpose of this document is to discuss and finalize the decision on what these topic areas will be. Below is the "working draft" list of these topic areas.
- Agriculture
- Consumer
- Education
- Energy
- Finance
- Global Development
- Health
- Law
- Manufacturing
- Ocean
- Research
- Safety
This list represents combined input from the user testing, discussion around the PMA, the list of existing data.gov communities, and the Data.gov development team.
Let's discuss potential changes using the comments below. Note that while there can be more than 12 topics (and associated pages), 12 is the maximum number of topics the design team feels comfortable putting in the main navigation.
We should add:
-- Business
-- Climate (community is in discussions and an important topic)
-- Developers (in the expanded list only since it's linked from the top of the page)
-- Ethics (in the expanded list)
-- Geospatial
