Remote virt-manager from Mac OS

If you have a Linux machine with KVM on it, you can manage those VMs remotely from a Mac using virt-manager.

Step 1: Allow your user non-root access to KVM

SSH to the Linux machine and add your SSH user to the libvirt group

sudo usermod -a -G libvirt $(whoami)

Adjusting SELinux to change SSH port in Fedora CoreOS

See coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker#396 (comment) for a bit of explanation.

Warning: The script will trigger warning messages in the systemd journal log that look like this:

systemd[1]: sshd.service: Found left-over process 4270 (conmon) in control group while starting unit. Ignoring.
systemd[1]: This usually indicates unclean termination of a previous run, or service implementation deficiencies.

This is probably a side effect of the script booting up podman containers to run semanage - I don't know how to get rid of this properly if it's possible at all but I think this can be ignored for now.

SSH daemon can take quite a long while to start for the first time due to the one-time image build.

Install Firefly on a Raspberry Pi 3 with Docker, Docker Compose and a self-signed certificate

I'm running a dockerized Firefly III on a Raspberry 3 in my local network. With the help of an additional nginx Container and a self-signed SSL Certificate I was able to set up https.

Maybe somebody will find this guide helpfull, it took me a couple of tries to get it right.

Install Docker on the Raspberry

Simply follow the official documentation at https://docs.docker.com/install/linux/docker-ce/debian/#install-using-the-convenience-script. You'll need to run the script if you are using the default Raspberry OS: Raspbian.

Install Docker Compose using Python PIP

Use Pythons package manager PIP to install Docker Compose, details can be found on docker.com as well: https://docs.docker.com/compose/install/#install-using-pip. Before you can follow the guide you'll need to install python-pip.

Create a private fork of a public repository

The repository for the assignment is public and Github does not allow the creation of private forks for public repositories.

The correct way of creating a private frok by duplicating the repo is documented here.

For this assignment the commands are:

  1. Create a bare clone of the repository. (This is temporary and will be removed so just do it wherever.)

git clone --bare [email protected]:usi-systems/easytrace.git

Don't use VPN services.

Don't use VPN services.

No, seriously, don't. You're probably reading this because you've asked what VPN service to use, and this is the answer.

Note: The content in this post does not apply to using VPN for their intended purpose; that is, as a virtual private (internal) network. It only applies to using it as a glorified proxy, which is what every third-party "VPN provider" does.

  • There's also this article about VPN services, which is honestly better written (and has more cat pictures!) than my article.
